About OPUS Dance Theatre
OPUS Dance Theatre (ODT) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of the Pan-African experience through dynamic performances and impactful educational programs. For over 25 years, ODT has championed the belief that arts education is
essential and should be a core part of every student’s learning journey. Through the development of inclusive, multicultural visual and performing arts curricula, ODT has worked to ensure that artistic expression remains a vital part of education.
Today, this commitment aligns with a broader national movement focused on quality and inclusion in education—where multicultural arts are not just complementary, but essential to a well-rounded classroom experience.
NYS Standards of the Arts-Music, with an emphasis on the migration of the Djembe drums from Africa to the United States. Music has played a crucial role in the social and political development across many cultures. Whether it is the sounds of the Bamana people in West Africa, the Jazz of the United States, or the Boleras in Puerto Rico-you hear the sound of the drum-the heart of the orchestra. The goal of this program is for the student to appreciate music as a language and understand the power a musical instrument has to tell a story.
Music as a Revolution
A high quality music elective, aligned with the NYS Standards of the Arts-Music, with an emphasis on the migration of the Djembe drums from Africa to the United States. Vocal-Creative Communication
An intensive creative writing elective, aligned with the NYS ELA standards, which provides students with a forum to practice and understand the power of words. It is the goal of this educational program to expose students to verbal and nonverbal forms of communication.
Drama
An intensive art elective design for performers and anyone else who want to free their bodies for maximum efficiency for self-expression. It will enable the student to identify habits that can reinforce their freedom of movement and balance. Students will learn to release bodily tension and move with more ease and poise thus becoming more conscious and accountable for the way they use their bodies. Students study selected plays from the perspectives of actors and directors, and the strategies of playwrights to develop the ability to imagine the play in performance and to appreciate the range of theatre's possibilities.
Dance Power
An intensive art elective designed to supplement and/or enhance the existing physical fitness program at your school. Dance Power offers students a chance to develop stories and express their stories through movement, which builds stronger ELA learners.
